What is a console Server? Simply put, this type of device is a hardware component usually with a software counterpart that enables users to access machines (computers) connected to the same network. This network can be within a business in the same building connected through local area networks or cords and a network could also be across the world connected through the internet. Common applications for this technology are as IT management tools. Within a company, users often have trouble using machines for one reason or another. Console servers enable IT professionals to diagnose and fix problems remotely as well as troubleshoot issues. Of course in a small environment this is not as essential but when a user on the 10th floor of an office building needs help from and IT professional on the 22nd floor, having access to the machine without descending 12 levels of staircases is invaluable and greatly increases productivity. The hardware piece of a console server is generally some type of cord or box that has multiple serial ports to connect many different machines at once. Other devices such as routers, modems, servers and switches can also be connected to console servers.
